Solar Control Window Film on the Costa del Sol
A south-facing room on this coast can run several degrees hotter than the rest of the house from May to September. Solar control film is the cheapest way to fix that permanently; it goes onto the glass you already have, in a day, with no building work and no change to the view from inside.
Solar control window film is a thin, optically clear layer applied to your existing glass that reflects and absorbs solar heat before it enters the room. Our Silver grades reject up to 80% of solar heat and 99% of UV, which lowers indoor temperature and air-conditioning load without replacing a single window.
How solar control film works
Think of it as sunglasses for the building. The film carries micro-thin layers of metal and nano-ceramics that reflect a large part of the infrared energy in sunlight and absorb more of it, so the heat is dealt with at the glass rather than after it has already entered the room.
Because the rejection happens at the window, the effect is immediate and constant. There is nothing to switch on, nothing to maintain, and no moving parts. We install Soltek and Armolan film, an American engineering specialist and a German precision brand, both rated for the UV load this coast actually gets.
Choosing the right grade
The number in the film name is roughly how much visible light it lets through, so a lower number means a darker, more reflective, cooler result. Silver 20 rejects 80% of solar heat and gives a strong one-way mirror effect by day. Silver 30 rejects 67% and keeps more daylight. Silver 50 rejects 45% and is the right answer for rooms that are already dark but still overheat.
Every grade blocks 99% of UV. The choice is about how much light and privacy you want, not about protection; that part is the same across the range.
Where it makes the most difference
Lounges with floor-to-ceiling glazing, west-facing terraces that become unusable in the afternoon, glass curtain systems that turn a terrace into a greenhouse, and any room where the air conditioning runs all day and still loses. Those are the jobs where the difference is obvious the same afternoon.
Common questions
Will solar control film make my rooms dark?
That is your choice. Silver 50 keeps most of the daylight and still removes 45% of the heat. Silver 20 is much darker and much cooler. We bring samples so you can hold each grade against your own glass before deciding.
Does it work on double glazing?
Yes, and most of the newer villas on this coast have it. The grade has to be chosen with the glass unit in mind, which is part of what we check on the site visit.
How long does solar film last?
Quality solar film on an interior application has a working life measured in many years, and both brands we install carry a manufacturer warranty. We back our own installation as well.
Can you fit it to glass curtains?
Yes. Frameless glass curtain systems are one of the most common jobs we do here, and they are one of the biggest heat gains on a Costa del Sol terrace.
